At By The Quay we believe in doing our bit for the planet! Below are a few of the ways we operate sustainably.

We work closely with Litter Free Dorset, who support us in finding ways to achieve sustainability as a small independent business. With their help we achieved the Sustainable Business Award 2024! DORSET FOCUSED

All of our food & beverage items are sourced locally within Dorset & Somerset! This commitment ensures fresh, high quality ingredients and helps reduce our carbon footprint.

We really value working with other local businesses, as it allows us to support and uplift one another.

FOOD WASTAGE

Any left over cakes & pastries are gifted to the local Community Fridge, rather than being thrown away.

It’s important to us that we keep our waste as minimal as possible and opt for sustainability over ease.

COFFEE GRINDS

Coffee grinds are an excellent fertilizer and can be used to boost the growth of veggies as well as deterring any unwanted bugs! We give our coffee grinds over to a local allotment group each week instead of throwing them away.

If you’re interested in taking some home just ask at the counter!

TAKEAWAY PACKAGING

We commit to sourcing sustainable packaging for our takeaway cups. All of our coffee cups are made from plants, plastic free and no oil is used to produce them.

They are 100% compostable, recyclable and biodegradable!

BYOB DISCOUNT

To reduce single-use and disposable materials, we offer a discount for customers who bring their own takeaway cup or mug!

As a part of the Litter Free Dorset BYOB initiative, it offers customers an opportunity to choose a more environmentally-friendly option.

WATER USAGE

At the end of each shift, we take any hot water left over in our urn and use it to clean with during our close down. This is a small and simple gesture, but it's a great way to decrease water usage!
